Buying a Used Phone in Ghana: A Safe Buyer's Checklist
A used phone can be excellent value, but only if you check it properly before you pay. Run through this checklist with the seller present.
Confirm it is not blocked or stolen
Dial *#06# to display the phone's IMEI number and check it matches the box and settings. Ask the seller how they came to own it. Be cautious of anyone unwilling to meet in a public place or who cannot explain the phone's history.
Inspect the screen and body
Look at the screen under good light for cracks, dead pixels or discolouration. Swipe across the whole display to check the touch responds everywhere. Check the body for heavy dents that might signal a hard drop or water damage.
Test the essentials
- Make a quick call to test the speaker and microphone.
- Take a photo with the front and back cameras.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Plug in a charger and confirm it charges.
- Check the battery health in settings if the phone supports it.
Check it is signed out
Make sure the previous owner has logged out of their Google or Apple account and reset the phone. A device still linked to someone else's account can lock you out completely.
Ask about accessories and history
Find out whether the original charger, box and receipt are included, and whether the phone has ever been repaired. The more complete and transparent the deal, the safer your purchase.
