How to Avoid Scams When Buying and Selling Online in Ghana

The vast majority of marketplace deals are genuine, but a few bad actors exist everywhere. These simple habits keep you safe.

Meet in person, in public

For most items, meeting face to face in a busy, well-lit place is the safest way to trade. Inspect the item, confirm it works, and pay only when you are satisfied. Bring a friend for higher-value deals.

Be careful with advance payments

A common trick is pressuring you to send a Mobile Money "deposit" to reserve an item or secure a rental before you have seen it. Genuine sellers do not need money upfront from a stranger. If someone insists on payment before any meeting or viewing, treat it as a red flag.

Watch for deals that are too good

A nearly-new phone or car priced far below everything else is usually bait. Scammers use unrealistic prices to rush you into paying quickly. If it feels too good to be true, it almost always is.

For sellers: Beware of "buyers" who offer to overpay, send a screenshot of a payment that never arrives, or ask you to ship before money clears. Confirm funds are actually in your account before releasing any item.

Protect your information

Never share your bank PIN, Mobile Money PIN or one-time passwords with anyone — no legitimate buyer or seller ever needs them. Keep conversations on record so you have a reference if something goes wrong.

Report anything suspicious

If an ad looks like a scam, use the Report option on the listing. Reporting helps protect other people in the community, and unsafe listings are removed.
